When it all feels different than you hoped and expected

You thought you had prepared for this new life chapter, and then you find…

You are struggling to connect with your baby

You are grieving the person you were before

You struggle to get pregnant

You experience a miscarriage or stillbirth

You feel alone and the “village” is nowhere to be found

The mental load. is. crushing. you.

You are having thoughts that scare you

You experience a traumatic birth

…. the list goes on, and on.

You are not alone in these feelings. Far from it.

Up to 45% of birthing people report their birth to be traumatic

Two-thirds of couples report a decline in relationship satisfaction after baby

11% of U.S. women of reproductive age experience infertility

Therapy can help.

Our work together will help you feel held and supported in a tender time.

My approach to perinatal therapy typically includes these general “stages”:

Assess + Explore

Together we will assess and explore the issues bringing you to therapy with compassion and curiosity. We will collaborate on therapeutic goals, and assess where to focus our energy in our early sessions based on what feels most urgent and overwhelming.

We will assess available support systems, and supplement where we can with additional resources.

Examine + Practice

We will examine the present narratives, stressors, and pressures contributing to overwhelm. We will practice coping strategies for grounding and self-soothing, and self-compassion in response to unhelpful and critical thoughts.

We will examine how your lived experiences and attachment relationships throughout your life are impacting you now, and how to untangle from unhelpful patterns.

Nurture + Empower

Equipped with improved insight and self-compassion, we will practice challenging the beliefs, thoughts, behaviors, and pressures that are no longer serving you. The process of creating change is non-linear, and seldom quick, so we will continue to support the areas that feel most sticky and hold space for processing and change with patience and grace.

My perinatal approach is strongly influenced by Karen Kleinman’s “Art of Holding” framework. It is also humanistic, feminist, and rooted in attachment theory. Where appropriate, I will incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), parts work (IFS), and mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy (MBCT) techniques.

This time feels hard, because it IS hard. You don’t have to do it alone.
